この歳になると、さすがに人前に出るときにすり切れたシャツにジーンズ、というわけにもいかないことがあるので、カタギな勤め人程ではないにせよ、タイを締められるシャツを着ることが多い。で、主戦力だったシャツがちょっと傷んできたこともあって、何枚か買うことにしたのだけど、これが僕にはどうしようもなく憂鬱なのだ。

いわゆる紳士服店に行ったとしよう。エビス顔で寄ってきた店員に挨拶されて、シャツを買いたいんだけど、と言うと、当店は数多く揃えておりますので、と胸を張られる。何言ってるんだかなあ、と思いつつ、採寸を頼むと、エビス顔のままでメジャーを取り出し、首、肩、腕と当てて……そしてエビス顔が消える。眉間に皺を寄せて、うーん、と唸りながら、運が良くてもセール品と遠いところにある棚、運が悪ければバックヤードに店員は消え、何分か待たされた後に、済まなさそうな顔をしながら、包装のビニールがやや埃っぽい、最近あまり光が当たっていないような品を手にして返ってくる。すみませんが、当店の在庫ではこれだけでして……最初の自信はどこへやら、だ。

どういうことかと言うと、僕は首回りに対して腕がかなり長いのだ。だから、いわゆるワゴンセールの品を買おうとすると、腕がつんつるてんか、首がガバガバか……のどちらかになってしまう。当然、サイズを合わせると高くつく。だから、シャツを買うというのは僕にとって憂鬱なイベントなのだ。

最近は、たとえばユニクロでも僕のような「特殊サイズ」に対応しているのだけど、店頭では当然そういう商品にアクセスできない。だから通販ということになるのだけど、今回はシャツの製造元の運営するサイトをいくつか覗いてみて、一番安そうなものを探してみる……結論として、一番安いのはユニクロなのであった。 なんだかなあ。どうして僕は、何もかもこう世間の標準とずれているんだろう。まあ、何から何まで平均で、それが当然保証されていることだと信じて疑わずに、傲慢に生きていく位だったら、今の自分の方がナンボもましだと思うけどね。

それにしてもしつこいなあ。
